NEWPORT, Oregon – In addition to recognizing an Oyster Cloyster chef each month, there will be a celebration on August 7 to commemorate August as the month of the Oyster, in recognition of the 10th Anniversary of the Oyster Cloyster and the groundbreaking for the new Oregon Coast Community College Aquarium Science building. The celebration will be held at the Central County Campus in South Newport from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Bruce Koike, OCCC Aquarium Science program director will demonstrate then provide opportunities for attendees to fish print. Gyotaku also known as Japanese fish printing, involves the application of paint directly onto a fish. Rice paper is then placed directly on the painted fish and the paper is then gently rubbed by hand. Koike has been expanding his expertise in this art form since 1994. Last year, Koike had a very successful show of his artwork at the Oregon Coast Aquarium Passages to the Deep exhibit and he regularly shows at the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival.

The Celebration of the Month of the Oyster festivities will begin with the Newport Community Drum Circle, followed by Lucky Gap, a local Blue Grass band, then Quetzalcoatl, the Hispanic Dance Group, and from Noon until 2:00 p.m., Past Forward, a jazz band with vocalist Chris Waugh.

Activities for kids and adults include fish printing, painting on real oyster shells, an oyster cartoon coloring book, face painting, and various interactive games. Attendees can also enter into an oyster fact contest, a raffle and a silent auction. Microscopes will also be available for looking at interesting sea life from the bay.

Free hot dogs (donations gladly accepted) will be grilled from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm in the back courtyard. Representatives from Landwaves, Inc., developer of Wilder, the new project being build near the campus, will be available to answer questions. Event sponsors include Landwaves, Inc., Oregon Coast Catering, Oregon Oyster Farms and Pepsi Cola Bottling.
