33rd Annual Newport Seafood & Wine Amateur Wine Competition

NEWPORT, Oregon – The judging for the 2010 Amateur Wine Competition took place on
Thursday, February 4, 2010, at the Champagne Patio in the SeaTowne Shopping Center.
There were over 15 judges
tasting and studying 70 wines, all entered by amateur wine makers not only from the Pacific Northwest,
but also from Alabama to Canada. Selected as 'Best of Show' was a Grenache wine made by Jerry James.
There were six Gold Medal Winners:
- Jerry James for a Cabernet Sauvignon – Dry and a Grenache wine;
- Jim Day for a Cabernet Sauvignon;
- Gary Penner for a Merlot – Dry;
- Alberto Rossi for a Cabernet-Merlot blend and
- Joe Frankus for a Raspberry sweet wine.
There were eighteen (18) Silver Medals awarded, which included several Cabernet-Sauvignons, Pinot Noirs,
a Dandelion Citrus wine and a Rhubarb wine. Twenty-two (22) Bronze Medals were awarded: including a Muscat,
an Orange Muscat, an Apple wine – Dry and a Sake. Congratulations to all the amateur wine makers who participated.
