You can attend seminars and learn how to fish for albacore tuna, use live bait, fish with outriggers, fish with downriggers, be safe on the ocean, and find SST (sea surface temperature) information on the internet. Along with these seminars, there will be kiosks where you can get more individualized help with things such as rod repair, marine radios and antennas, boat maintenance, gear rigging, making wind-on leaders, marine navigation, and fishing with swim baits. There will be a special kiosk where attendees can ask experts in a variety of areas. Food will be available for purchase.
A number of governmental agencies will be present to provide information and answer questions. The list includes the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, US Coast Guard (USCG), the Oregon State Police, the National Ocean & Atmospheric Administration, Oregon State University, and the Port of Newport.
The USCG will offer tours of their facility and boats on Sunday, March 7. Weather permitting, they will have a live on-the-water helicopter search and rescue demonstration, as well as a demo of how to pump out water from a boat that has taken on water. There will also be a demonstration of various emergency flares, with viewing and commentary available from Englund Marine's location on the bay. Englund Marine will have a special Sunday opening with special pricing offered to show attendees.
On Saturday evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., you will have the opportunity to test your PFD (life Jacket) at a Newport swimming pool and see how it works, rather than first experience its operation in an emergency situation.
The Saltwater Sportsmen's Show is put on by OCEAN, the ¬Oregon Coalition for Educating ANglers, a non-profit corporation run by volunteers. OCEAN is an organization established and maintained to support conservation of and research on marine fisheries, as well as to sponsor and promote activities to assist in marine fisheries management. OCEAN also promotes safety on the water.
Late Saturday afternoon, there will be a fundraising raffle and auction of many outstanding donated items, including weeklong stays at the coast and at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; fishing gear; fishing trips; food; fishing books, and much more. Proceeds of the raffle and auction will go toward expenses for putting on the show and other OCEAN projects.
